Shetland Islands Council Convener Malcolm Bell Professional Portrait

Lerwick Town Hall

It's still always a special moment when I see one of my pictures on the wall - something I never take for granted. That is why I felt very privileged to be asked to take a portrait of Shetland Islands Council convener Malcolm Bell who will be stepping aside at the end of this council term.

The former policeman has been both councillor and convener since 2012, making him the second-longest serving councillor to A I Tulloch who was convener from 1975-1986.

There is a gallery of previous conveners on the stairs of Lystina House which adjoins the Town Hall. It was really interesting to see the gallery to help me with the thought process for Malcolm's portraits. The location for the shoot was the council chamber, so the beautiful stained glass windows was chosen for the background and we decided on the window with the Shetland Islands Council crest.

It was important to get a nice quality of light on Convener Malcolm Bell and to show off the stained glass window in the background. I always want my portraits to stand the test of time, so wanted a modern look but with a classic element to it.

Many thanks to Malcolm, and the team at the Town Hall and Lystina House; I wish you all the best for the future.
