Living Lerwick Winter Festival 2012

Pictured below are images from Shetland’s first Winter Festival organised by Living Lerwick.  The response from the local public was absolutely immense with hundreds of people lining Commercial Street for the parade resulting in a fantastic atmosphere – I’ve never seen anything like it!

The Winter Festival started at 3.30pm on 24th November 2012 with a family parade beginning at Santa’s Grotto at the south end of Commercial Street and culminated with the turning on of the new Christmas lights.

The festival included a programme of events and activitives designed to generate a fun and festive atmosphere in the town centre.  This included street decorations, street advent calendar, light projectors, roasted chestnuts and a Santa’s grotto.

As one of the directors of Living Lerwick it was very heartening to see the work of everyone involved paying off.  We’ve received a lot of constructive feedback to help make the Winter Festival bigger and better next year.  If you have any suggestions of your own, please leave a comment below.

Lerwick High Street took on a very festive look with the delivery of 50 christmas trees which each business displayed outside their respective stores.  Pictured here are staff members of COPE Ltd beginning to deliver the trees.  They will look after the trees during the coming year and reuse again at Winter Festival 2013.

Not quite sure what my nephew Ruben was making of it all!
