The Broons’ Days Oot!

I was delighted when my Up Helly Aa ‘Ring of Fire‘ image was included in the updated edition of The Broons’ Days Oot! published by Waverley Books in Glasgow.

The image used can be viewed on my gallery page by clicking here.

Here is a synopsis about the book:

The Broons Days Oot” – is a guide to days out in Scotland, with extensive coverage of Historic Scotland and National Trust for Scotland sites. There are ideas to go to Galleries and Museums, visit Castles and Gardens, join in a Ghost Walk, enjoy a day at the Highland Games and many more activities that the whole family can do together, just like The Broons! The Broons family love to go on ‘days oot!’ – family outings, usually accompanied by a feast in an expedition-sized hamper, tartan travel rugs and the odd spare pair of socks! There are cameos from all of the Broons – their favorite trips and places to go. Edinburgh Castle, Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum, New Lanark World Heritage Site, and Culzean Castle are amongst the most visited places in Scotland. This book is packed with ideas to get folk out and about in Scotland – there’s so much to see and enjoy. They take turns choosin’ where. Sometimes they go in the car or on the bus, or take the bikes – there’s so much to see that’s not so far off from the But an’ Ben. Sometimes it’s a castle or the botanics, or a garden that’s open somewhere – Granpaw has his favorites. Horace likes museums and galleries. They are all very keen on the Highland Games, so that’s definitely one to look forward to, but Maw makes sure there is a bit of fun for everyone. The Broons all love a boat trip, or perhaps just a day at the beach is the very dab. And there are a few wee tips from Maw about what goes in the hamper! There’s a folded wall map from Nicolson maps – a tourist map of Scotland. One thing’s for sure – they are all happy days!

I was struck with the amount of detail that has gone into this book.  The mix of artwork, photographs, facts and figures makes it an excellent book for the collection as well as a great travel guide.

The Broons’ Days Oot! is available at all good bookshops.

Up Helly Aa 2011 – Off With Its Head!

I hung around after the crowds had dispersed to capture the head of the galley as it eventually fell to the ground.

This is the final blog post from Up Helly Aa 2011.  I hope you have enjoyed them.  To view all my Up Helly Aa 2011 blog posts in one continuous thread click here and to view my gallery pages click here.

David Gifford has an amusing post on his blog titled ‘Press Gang’ showing me and other fellow local photographers during the day.  He also has some excellent photographs from the event himself.  To view click here.

Well done again to John Hunter and his squad for leading an excellent Up Helly Aa.

Up Helly Aa 2011 – Torch Lights

I must admit this picture was a bit of an accident, but I actually like it!  This picture was taken immediately after the torches were lit before the procession began.  I like the way it emphasises that the only visible light is from the torches as the street lights are killed to add impact to the procession.

Up Helly Aa 2011 – Torch Trail

The image above shows the route torch carriers take as they enter the burning site.  The Raven Banner is fluttering nicely at the Town Hall which I must say is a beautiful building, especially when it is illuminated.

Guizer Jarl John Hunter aka Johan Sanderrevet of Valsgärde

Guizer Jarl John Hunter stands in oven like conditions to pose for photographs after the burning of galley Jägere.

I heard John mention to a reporter earlier in the day that this was the proudest day of his life.  Throughout the day John and his Jarl Squad were a credit to the event.  The amount of work that went into the organisation of the event, not mentioning the fantastic Viking outfits, must have been immense.

Up Helly Aa 2011 – In The Ring of Fire II

The Guizer Jarl safely departs the galley and then the brass band summon all the guizers to throw in their torches.  The clatter of torches hitting the bottom of the boat is heard before the flames grow and grow – an impressive spectacle indeed.  You can see at the bottom of this photograph the line of camera LCD screens and at the top the sight of camera flashes firing as spectators capture the moment.

Interesting article today in the Scotsman about Up Helly Aa which can be viewed here.

Up Helly Aa 2011 - In The Ring of Fire

Pictured above is the moment when all the guizers encircle the Jarl in the galley before the burning takes place.

The sheer scale of the event is evident here as the park fills with guizers having marched around the streets.  If you click on the image to enlarge, have a look at everything that is going on from the locals watching out of their windows to the many camera flashes of people recording this fantastic spectacle.  If you look closely you can see Jarl John Hunter standing in the galley.  The view he experienced must have been amazing.

Junior Guizer Jarl Silhouette

The next photo in my Up Helly Aa 2011 collection is a silhouette of Junior Guizer Jarl Rory Johnston. Thanks to Rory for posing for a few photographs as it was fiercely hot.  The silhouette emphasises the outline of the wings rising on either side.

A lot more information on the history of the Jarl Squad regalia is available on the official site here.

Junior Up Helly Aa 2011 Galley Burning

The Junior Up Helly Aa galley is left to burn after all the torches have been thrown in – an awesome sight indeed.  After the junior procession is over the organisers have a quick turnaround to prepare the burning site for the senior event shortly after.
