Shetland Photography – Out & About # 10

Had a great night last night with the camera down at the Ireland Beach. I had to abandon the car washing in order to have sufficient time to capture the sunset which I knew was shaping up to be a real humdinger with Foula clearly visible on the horizon. Could this be the start of the summer?
Really enjoying the combination of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II with the Canon 17-40mm F4 L lens - great sharpness and the bigger LCD screen is much easier to use than the smaller one on my old Canon EOS 20D.
Thursday was election day and I would like to congratulate Alistair Carmichael on retaining his Shetland and Orkney seat by a clear majority up 10.5% on the previous campaign. It was, however, a disappointing night for the Liberal Democrats overall as they failed to gain ground on their rivals despite a few bouyant performances by Nick Clegg during the live TV debates.
Have another image from last night’s sunset which I’ll post soon.

Shetland Photography – Hamnavoe Sunset Part 1
(click on image for larger view)
Despite being heavily under the weather with a bad cold, I sensed a potentially good sunset image as I left Lerwick at 5pm. I took a diversion and headed firstly towards Scalloway and then Hamnavoe where the above image was taken.
The snowy weather we’ve experienced this week has resulted in some really interesting cloud formations. This helped in forming a stunning evening sky as you can see above. I was definitely glad I made the journey having a great time in the flat calm evening taking photographs which helped to take my mind off my cold!
This photo is available to purchase over on my main gallery section in a range of exciting options from canvas prints to photo mugs. Click here to order.

Shetland Photography – Rush Hour Traffic Trails
Picture above is an image I took recently on my way home one evening from Sandy Loch Reservoir. My aim was to capture the trails of light from rush hour traffic leaving Lerwick. Combined with the beautiful evening light I think it’s a pleasing image.

Shetland Photography – Spiggie Panorama
Picture above is a beautiful sunset taken recently looking towards Spiggie. Darkness had fallen apart from this area which lit up the sky in glorious technicolour. A four second shutter speed was therefore required to ensure sufficient depth-of-field. It always amazes me that brief moment of fantastic colours which appear after the sun has gone down.

Shetland Photography – St Ninian’s Sunset
The picture above was taken during the same session as the ‘Cold Snap’ blog entry recently. (Click here to view).
I really liked the backlighting creating a fabulous range of tones and colours on the sea.
Hope you enjoy.

Shetland Photography – Dancing on Ice
Pictured above is a photo I took recently down at Quendale Loch.
I had been out taking photographs most of the afternoon and sensed that the sunset was going to be spectacular so was looking for good locations. After a bit of a trek I eventually got to this herd of Swans searching for food on the frozen lake.
They quickly departed towards Spiggie Loch a few minutes after I had taken my photos.

Shetland Photography – Cold Snap
Pictured above is a photo of a dramatic sunset at St Ninian’s Isle during the big freeze (click on image for larger view).
After a hazardous walk down the road to St Ninian’s Isle due to the hard ice, I was surprised to find the sand in exactly the same condition.
It took a little while to get the right angle for this photo, but I love the way the reflection of the clouds on the water creates a circle which really adds to the composition.

Out & About # 1 – Stunning Sunset
Was out and about last Tuesday taking photographs of what was possibly the best sunset of the year in my opinion. During the night’s thoroughly enjoyable photo shoot, I covered the Northmavine area including Eshaness where there was some beautiful light. The last picture was taken about 11.15pm in Northmavine so it was a long drive back to Bigton.
I’m posting these photos over at www.benmullay.com if you would like to place an order.
