Jennifer and Raymond’s Wedding, 30th June 2011

Jennifer and Raymond married last Thursday at the Shetland Museum and Archives on the balcony outside Hay’s Dock.  After the service we went to the Jubilee Flower Park on King Harald Street which offered an excellent location for some photographs.  The happy couple and the wedding party then returned to the museum in order to cut the cake and enjoy their meal.  Here are a few images from Jennifer and Raymond’s big day.  I wish them all the very best.

Up Helly Aa 2011- Daytime

As I came into Lerwick on Tuesday morning I thought the beautiful red sunrise was very apt for Up Helly Aa day.

This year Jarl John Hunter (aka Johan Sanderrevet of Valsgärde) had the freedom of Lerwick as he took his 65 strong squad around town after years of planning and preparation.  I learned a bit more about Jarl John Hunter’s viking name on the Shetland News website:

Johan Sanderrevet was a restless Swede in the 9th century who sailed west on board his galley Jägere only to be hit by a storm of such severity that all but three of his fleet of longships were driven off the cliffs of Fugaey.

The viking believed he was saved by his magical armlet woven gold called Svíagris; but this armlet was lost as he wintered on the isle of Oxna west of Scalloway.

More than a thousand years later a gold bracelet less than three inches in diameter was found by a young James Fullerton on that same island, a bracelet which can now be seen in Edinburgh’s National Museum of Scotland.

Today copies of that bracelet adorned the chest of every member of John Hunter’s squad.

I met up with the Jarl Squad at the Toll Clock Shopping Centre.  The Lerwick Legion was the next port of call which was followed by the morning procession march along the Esplanade, then Commercial Street pausing at the Bill located at Market Cross and finishing at the Bressay Ferry Terminal for photographs.  I then went along to the Guizer Jarl’s next appointment at the Shetland Museum and Archives where a large crowd had gathered.

Please feel free to leave your comments below.  Whether it’s a comment on the photographs on show, or your highlight of the event, it would be great to hear from you.

Viewing suggestion:  To view the images below I suggest you click on the first photograph which will open up a separate window.  Click on the right/left arrows at the side of each image to progress.

Islesburgh Photographic Club currently have an exhibition on at the Shetland Museum & Archives in Da Gadderie.  The title of the display is ‘Four Seasons in Shetland’.  I went along on Saturday to see the launch and there are plenty of good images on view so would recommend visiting.  The exhibition runs until the 10th October 2010.

Worldwide Photo Walk 2010 – Winner!

Chainlink by Gillian Okill - Worldwide Photo Walk 2010 Winner (Shetland) 2010

The winner of this year’s Worldwide Photo Walk 2010 (Shetland leg) is Gillian Okill.  Congratulations to Gillian who wins a digital photography book and goes forward with all the other local winners across the world to be in contention of winning the grand prize.

I chose this image because it’s pin-sharp despite being at quite a hard height to photograph.  The rusty chain is well composed within the photograph.  I also like the contrast between the hard, edgy stones behind the chain and the smaller, lighter ones in the distance.

Thanks to everyone that took part and I hope to see you all again next year.

Worldwide Photo Walk 2010 Review (Part 2)

Pictured below are a few images I managed to capture during this year’s Worldwide Photo Walk.  I took a lot more photos on last year’s photo walk as this time I was concentrating on ensuring everyone’s questions were answered whilst giving a few of my own tips along the way.

Worldwide Photo Walk 2010 Review (Part 1)

Yesterday I hosted Shetland’s leg of the Worldwide Photo Walk.  Last year the walk was at Spiggie but this year it was held at the Shetland Museum & Archvies and surrounding area.

Fortunately I didn’t have to reschedule this year’s walk as the weather was kind to us.  It was great to see lots of new faces this year as well as several people from my previous walk.

After a brief introduction everyone dispersed to capture photographs.  It was interesting to see how people interpreted the area and how they tackled different subjects.  I ensured I went around everybody individually to answer any questions they may have had or offer tips of my own along the way.

This dedicated photography time allowed everyone to see things from a photographic perspective which is maybe different from how they would have usually viewed the scenes in front of them.

As the walk progressed several walkers came across a local fisherman feeding a hungry seal which made for some exciting photographs.  I look forward to seeing some of their results.

The walk culminated in a review session at the Hay’s Dock Cafe where we were able to share some of the images we’d all captured.  I’d like to thank everyone for staying on as it really was a fine way to end the day’s walk.

A Flickr group has been set up for people who attended the photo walk to share their images.  This can be viewed by clicking here.

The winning photography from my photo walk will win a digital photography book and go forward to win the overall grand prize.  Stay tuned to my website for the winning entry.

Thanks again

Ben

Andrew & Sinead’s Midnight Wedding

Last weekend I had the pleasure of photographing Andrew Bowie and Sinead Johnstone’s midnight wedding at the Shetland Museum.  This was my first wedding with this format so was very excited as the day approached.  Andrew grew up in Shetland but now resides in Australia with Sinead whose home town is Dublin.

I met Andrew and Sinead a few days prior to the wedding and they couldn’t have been more pleasant to deal with.

Here are a few images from Andrew and Sinead’s big day.  I wish them all the very best for the future as husband and wife and hope they have a fanstastic trip to South America before they head back to Australia.

-Ben

P.S. Congratulations to Shetland Museum Facilities Manager Paul Nadin and his team for hosting an excellent event and for making everything run so smoothly.
