Sunset over Lerwick
Pictured above is an image from the Knab looking towards the south end of Lerwick. The sky was very dramatic which drew me to the shot. I hope you enjoy.

Dilapadated Bus
On the drive back from Sumburgh after returning from my holiday I came across this old bus. I thought this would be a great photographic opportunity what with the rough textures, range of colours and dramatic clouds.

UPDATE
I have been doing some digging around and found out some more information on this vehicle from a reliable source.
This AEC bus was taken up during the early 1970s when the Sullom Voe Oil Terminal was getting started. The bus eventually ended up being used as a school contract bus from the Sandwick Transport Company.
To find out more about the AEC buses then I found a dedicated website here.
If anyone else can shed any more information on this bus then I’d be interested to hear.

Clava Viaduct over the River Nairn
Hi there, sorry for the lack of blogging recently. I’ve been very busy and have also been on holiday. Had a superb ten days away starting off in Inverness, London and finishing up in Aberdeen.
The photos below were taken at Clava Viaduct which is situated 6 miles East of Inverness. The Clava Viaduct carries the railway from Inverness to Perth 39m (128 feet) above the valley of the River Nairn. This beautiful Viaduct was built between 1893 and 1898, is some 549m (600 yards) in length and consists of 29 red sandstone arches. The viaduct was built by Sir John Fowler (1817-98) and Murdoch Paterson (1826-98).

Cologne at Sunset
Pictured above is an image I made in 2008 when visiting Cologne for Photokina 2008.
There was hardly a soul in the area when I scouted this location and started getting the camera gear ready. By the time I’d finished I turned around and was startled because there were tens of people behind me taking exactly the same shot. They must have seen I was onto a good thing!
This image is available to purchase in a range of different products over on my gallery page here.

There’s a hole in my bucket
This is an image I took in Quarff last weekend. I came across this bucket which had washed up onto the shore. Combined with the tanker in the background I think it’s a pleasant image.

Make Hay
(click on image for larger view)
Pictured above is my first attempt at HDR photography. HDR stands for High Dynamic Range which basically means that the highlights, midtones and shadows of a scene are captured in separate exposures and then combined to make one image. For more information click here.
I’ve never quite decided if I like HDR as some images I’ve seen have that overly “Harry Potter” look. I’ll admit, this example is perhaps a bit on the extreme side but I think it works. I really like the grungy effect emphasising all the foreground interest.

Viking Parade – Clickimin Loch
I was out and about late last night capturing some photographs of the special Viking procession to mark the close of Shetland Hamefarin 2010.
The Clickimin Loch lights were switched off during the parade so I made this image once the famous landmark was displayed in all its glory.
If you look closely you’ll see some swans who returned to the loch after some 400 guizers took part in a torch-lit parade around Clickimin Loch. The parade culminated in the the burning of a specially prepared galley which marked the end of Shetland Hamefarin 2010.
Photos of the parade to follow.

Shetland Photography – Out & About # 11
The image was taken from Fladdabister looking out towards Bressay. In Shetland you often hear the expression that we’ve experienced “four seasons in one day” as the weather can change so rapidly. Well, the day I took this photograph was no exception.
I’m always hunting around for interesting foregrounds to add some depth and dimension to my photographs. I was very fortunate to have this beautiful rainbow appear after a heavy shower giving extra impact to the image. The bright yellow buttercups in the foreground suggest that summer may just be with us…
P.S. Thankfully I have all my camera kit still intact. In the excitement of running up and down hills to capture the photo I didn’t realise that one of my lenses had fallen out of my camera bag en-route – oops!
