Missy and Paul got married at Weisdale Church followed by afternoon tea at Busta House Hotel.  The reception and evening dance was held in the Brae Hall where May & Mackie and The Experience provided the entertainment.

The amount of detail involved in the wedding was extraordinary.  For example, every place at the reception had a tea cup and saucer which all guests took home with them at the end of the evening by tying up in the supplied clear bag – a lovely momento from Missy and Paul’s big day.  Missy’s creative vision for the wedding was executed perfectly.

Missy and Paul were a pleasure to deal with during the whole day and I wish them all the very best for the future.  They are currently on honeymoon in America so I look forward to hearing about their travels on their return.

After a beautiful day on Saturday, I headed out to Trondra in the evening where I managed to capture the sunset images above.  Here’s hoping for plenty more in the summer.

Had a really good walk on Sunday up to the windmills at Tingwall.  The trek was definitely worth it for the spectacular panoramic views from the top. 

The second picture shows Njuggels Water which I learnt is where the water in Scalloway used to come from.  There is apparently a World War II bunker near the loch which I would really like to go and visit.

Meanwhile, wedding season is now well under way so stay tuned for all the latest coverage.

Bigton Community Shop – Under New Management

The ownership of the shop in Bigton was transferred to the Bigton Community Enterprise Ltd on Saturday April 14th and was renamed the Bigton Community Shop reflecting its new status as a co operative for the benefit of the community.

A cheque and flowers were presented to Dunese Fullerton outgoing owner as the keys were handed over to newly appointed shop manager Caroline Smith. Over 20 volunteers worked over the weekend to prepare the shop for its first day of trading on Monday. In addition to the shop manager, the shop will be staffed by volunteers initially.

The shop is being restocked and has added some new range of products from Scoop and the Co operative shop in Lerwick in addition to the supply of vegetables, fresh fish and meat from local producers. The shop opening hours are to remain the same for the short term.

Mrs Fullerton will continue to act as sub post mistress to ensure the Post Office remains open whilst transfer arrangements are progressed as the Post Office is seen as an integral part of the shop and an important asset for the community.

An official opening event is planned for Saturday June 23rd.

Chairman of the Bigton Community Enterprise Rick Nickerson said: “The Committee are delighted that the project has reached another milestone in keeping both the shop and Post Office open. This could not have been achieved without the support of the community and assistance from agencies such as Shetland Islands Council and Highland and Islands Enterprise through the Business Gateway, SocialFirmsScotland, the Big Lottery and The Co-operative Enterprise Hub. I would also like to acknowledge the role of Dunese in the smooth transition and in particular her patience on the time it has taken to reach this point.”

Bigton Community shop gets a new manager

Do you keep all your precious photographs stored on your computer?  What would happen if your computer crashed and you lost all those years of memories?  Archiving photographs has always been a bit of a laborious task; however, a new product on the market allows you to back up all your photos in one simple click.

The Camera Centre in Lerwick were the first in the UK to stock this product and is available in-store or online here.  There are three versions available which store up to 4000, 8000 and 16000 images respectively.  I would suggest you purchase the Picture Keeper which stores slightly more images than you think you’ll need as you’ll always take more pictures.

The thing I love about Picture Keeper is that if you do a second back up, Picture Keeper will only update the newest photos on your computer avoiding any duplication of images.  As Picture Keeper is a USB device, you can easily share your images on other devices such as a digital photo frame or print the photos at your local picture lab.

I was very fortunate to be onboard the Northern Lighthouse Vessel (NLV) Pharos when the Tall Ships departed Lerwick last year. 

Having been out at sea witnessing the start of the next leg of the race to Stavanger, I was treated to this very slick landing from the pilot of the contract helicopter.  The contract helicopter provides access and re-supply to some of the most remote areas in Scotland and Isle of Man.
