Joint NAFC appointment

20130702-4320

TWO LONG standing NAFC Marine Centre employees have been promoted to jointly manage the college’s marine science and technology department.

Dr Beth Leslie and Dr Chevonne Angus will both move into the position vacated by Dr Martin Robinson in June this year.

The two scientists will be continuing with their current work but also be responsible for the day-to-day management of the department, staff and associated infrastructure.

Interim director of the NAFC Marine Centre, Willie Shannon said both were extremely well respected within their field and would bring a lot of credibility to the role.

“We are very fortunate to have a tremendously talented staff group within the department who cover a wide range of activities.

“It is vital that we continue to build on the reputation for our work, which is recognised internationally. I believe that Chevonne and Beth are the right people to make this happen,” he said.

Dr Angus started working at the college as a graduate in 1997 and has gained a wide range of research and teaching experience since then.

She said: “Taking on this role will bring new challenges but I believe that there is huge potential for the Department and the work that we do so I am very excited to have a key role in driving it forward.

”Dr Leslie added: “We have a highly qualified staff base within the department and are producing high quality outputs relevant to local industry.  I am really looking forward to developing this work further as we move forward.

”The department conducts applied research and provides training and advice to marine-based industries within Shetland, Scotland and beyond.
