Shetland Photography – Hamnavoe Sunset Part 1
(click on image for larger view)
Despite being heavily under the weather with a bad cold, I sensed a potentially good sunset image as I left Lerwick at 5pm. I took a diversion and headed firstly towards Scalloway and then Hamnavoe where the above image was taken.
The snowy weather we’ve experienced this week has resulted in some really interesting cloud formations. This helped in forming a stunning evening sky as you can see above. I was definitely glad I made the journey having a great time in the flat calm evening taking photographs which helped to take my mind off my cold!
This photo is available to purchase over on my main gallery section in a range of exciting options from canvas prints to photo mugs. Click here to order.

Shetland Photography – Snow Patrol
(click on image for larger view)
Pictured above is a photograph of Lerwick taken from Sea Road looking towards Hillhead/Scalloway Road.
The snow season continues with heavy showers this week resulting in school closures. Thanks to the excellent work by the road men and their gritters, I’ve managed to get to work each morning without any problems. The landscape is completely transformed when the showers have subsided and the sun is out resulting in some beautiful scenery. I think we’re pretty well catered for in Shetland when it comes to road safety during snowy weather.
Dave Wheeler’s site is my usual port of call for weather updates. His site can be found here: http://www.northisles-weather.co.uk/. 60 North TV is another useful source to guage weather across the isle: http://www.shetland.org/60NTV/index.html
Take care

Shetland Photography – Rush Hour Traffic Trails
Picture above is an image I took recently on my way home one evening from Sandy Loch Reservoir. My aim was to capture the trails of light from rush hour traffic leaving Lerwick. Combined with the beautiful evening light I think it’s a pleasing image.

Shetland Photography – Spiggie Panorama
Picture above is a beautiful sunset taken recently looking towards Spiggie. Darkness had fallen apart from this area which lit up the sky in glorious technicolour. A four second shutter speed was therefore required to ensure sufficient depth-of-field. It always amazes me that brief moment of fantastic colours which appear after the sun has gone down.

Up Helly Aa 2010 – Slantigirt Flabley
Apologies for the unrelated photography blog entry, but I thought I’d post this very amusing clip of the Up Helly Aa Squad No.19 – Slantigirt Flabley.
For those that are not familiar with Up Helly Aa then here is a summary below:
Up Helly Aa is a tradition that originated in the 1880s. Since then the festival has been an annual occurrence in the Shetland calendar…Up Helly Aa is many things to many people, throughout the day there are experiences a plenty to be had by all from the celebration of our history, the sight of the Guizer Jarl, his Jarl Squad marching through the town followed by his galley to the evening party atmosphere in the halls.

Shetland Photography – St Ninian’s Sunset
The picture above was taken during the same session as the ‘Cold Snap’ blog entry recently. (Click here to view).
I really liked the backlighting creating a fabulous range of tones and colours on the sea.
Hope you enjoy.

Shetland Photography – Dancing on Ice
Pictured above is a photo I took recently down at Quendale Loch.
I had been out taking photographs most of the afternoon and sensed that the sunset was going to be spectacular so was looking for good locations. After a bit of a trek I eventually got to this herd of Swans searching for food on the frozen lake.
They quickly departed towards Spiggie Loch a few minutes after I had taken my photos.
